Messiah College restores iconic covered bridge

July 14th, 2011

GRANTHAM, Pa. (July 14, 2011) — The iconic covered bridge that spans the Yellow Breeches Creek on Messiah College’s Grantham campus is getting a facelift this summer. The bridge, constructed in 1867 and moved from Bowmansdale in 1972, is structurally sound. The restoration work primarily involves replacing wood siding and cedar shingles.

Messiah has contracted with Fitzgerald’s Heavy Timber Construction, Inc. based in Thurmont, Md. for the restoration work. Fitzgerald’s is using modern equipment and vintage machinery to maintain the historical integrity of the bridge.

The bridge has been closed to vehicle and foot traffic during restoration. It is expected to reopen in mid-August.
