Messiah College’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration 2008 - “The Cost of Love”

We know love by this, that Christ laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?

We welcome the entire Messiah community to join us as we celebrate the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 40th anniversary of his assassination. Below are the events we offer you this week. Our theme this year, “The Cost of Love,” focuses on the topic of economic justice. We ask: how well are we achieving King’s dream of economic justice 40 years after he challenged our country to treat all people with equity and compassion? How do our country, our city and our campus reflect God’s hopes for the welfare of all human beings? Come explore these questions with us.

Thursday, January 17
Common Chapel
Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King with student creative performances and a devotional message from Matthew Hunter, National & International Service and Mission Director for the Agape Center. Brubaker Auditorium, 9:45 - 10:30 a.m.

Scholarship Symposium
(Alternate Chapel Credit)
Panelists will reflect on Dr. King’s Mountaintop speech and his vision of economic justice in light of their own experience 40 years after his assassination.

Interdenominational Service for Dr. King
Attend the Interdenominational Minister Conference’s 31st Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute of Celebration. Become mobilized by the great preaching of Rev. William D. Watley, Ph.D., Senior Pastor of St. James AME Church, Newark, NJ., along with the Lincoln University Gospel Choir. Reception starts at 6:00 PM followed soon afterward by the service.

Come hear Dr. Powery, Professor of New Testament at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, address themes from his recently released book in a lecture entitled “True to Our Native Land: The Bible and African Americans in the 21st Century.” Dr. Powery’s book, True to Our Native Land: An African American New Testament Commentary, highlights the role of the Bible in African American history, accenting themes of ethnicity, class, slavery, and African heritage, and the role these themes play in the lives of African American Christians.
