One To Go

I had a meeting with my Academic Adviser yesterday to go over the courses I will be taking in the Spring. Our meetings are usually short. I do a lot of preparation ahead of time and pretty much know everything I need/want to take before going in to meet with him. We just look over what I have and he’ll give me suggestions and this thoughts about it all. All in all it’s a pretty quick and painless situation. Just how I like it.
This past meeting was a unique one however. The main thing is that it is my last academic advising meeting, ever! That in itself is crazy to think about. The second interesting factor was that, for the first time, I had 4 credits that I could do absolutely anything I wanted with. I need 16 credits to graduate, with only 12 of those fulfilling my remaining requirements. 4 electives with no strings attached.
Now, it’s true most majors have electives that you can use to take whatever you want with, but I didn’t really get to choose how to use those because half way through my Sophomore year I changed majors from Computer Science to Marketing. When I did that, my 15 credits of Computer courses suddenly turned into electives and I have spent the remaining semesters here at Messiah taking full loads of Business courses and the remainder of my gen ed’s playing catch up.
But, at last, here at the end I have found that I have managed to not only catch myself up but also get slightly ahead and can have more freedom in my choice of classes. I am also finding, however, that I really like my major and that is where my interests lie. So, for my remaining credits I am going to stay within my major and take another business course “Personal Selling” as well as another, 1 credit, gym class to meet my 16 credits needed to graduate.
Overall, I am relieved and pleased with how everything has worked out. It could have been much worse. I remember meeting with my Adviser last fall and at that point it seemed inevitable that I would need to take two 19 credit semesters and one 18 credit semester just to meet my requirements to graduate. Thankfully for me, through the miracle that is “one course meeting two requirements” I am able to not only graduate on time, but also take only 16 credits my two remaining semesters at Messiah.
So, that is where things stand as of now. I register for classes on Tuesday morning, and then I am done with picking out classes and all that jazz, for a good long while!
