This seems to be a pretty big question so far and I wanted to write about it a little more.  I have touched on it briefly in my other posts but I thought it deserved to be the sole focus of one.  So here we go, a How To to making friends at Messiah.

1. Befriend Your RA

Your RA is an upperclassmen and knows the campus.  He or she also already has an established set of friends whom you more than likely will be welcomed to join in with.  Quick friends easily.  (my RA is still my best friend)

2. Get to know your neighbors

You know those people who will be living around you?  How much easier can it get for you?  You probably don’t even have to leave your room.  They’ll walk right by your door.  Big tip/suggestion: Keep Your Room Door Open Always! (excluding some obvious moments such as sleeping, homework, etc.)

3. Peer Group

Again, you’re going to be forced to be near these people for an extended period of time, so make the most out of it! Besides class, you’ll be going to lectures, presentations, activities, etc. as a group.  You’ll be seeing a lot of eachother the first week.  It’s up to you to make some friendships last after that.

4. Classes

While the actual situation of being in class is not excellent for making friends and being social, it’s all about finding something in common to talk about.  You will have the same topics you can talk about, the same homework to accomplish.  Study sessions anyone?  It’s a start…

5. Lottie/Union

Lots and lots of people hang out here.  It’s where the food’s at.  But seriously, they’re social situations.  If you’re capable of handling your own socially, these are obvious places to look for ways to meet people.  While I am not one to just pop in and start talking to someone, if you are someone like that, this is the place to go.  There’s also pool tables and a foosball table.  Challenge someone to a game.

These are the top 5 ways in my opinion.  It’s certianly not the only way to meet people.  They’re the easiest and most obvious however.  If you have other ideas, or some comments, post away!

I think you had a lot of good advice here on how to make friends!! Would you say that Messiah has as many clicks as high schools?

No, I wouldn’t say we have cliques per se. We have groups who hang out but that’s because they have similar interests (sports teams, majors, etc.) I can’t say they’re cliques though because nobody is really ever excluded from these groups even if they don’t hold the same interests.
