I received the following quote, via a comment, and started to respond to it but then decided that this deserved it’s own post. So, here we go.

‘Michael: Your blog is sub-titled “Experiencing life at Messiah.” So, tell me, what has been your favorite Messiah experience so far?’

This is an excellent question, if not nearly impossible for me to answer. At least not by pinpointing to a single moment. So, what I am going to do here is write a pretty lengthy post about my favorite experiences (plural) and kind of sum up my time here at Messiah so far.

I am going to start with my first year. I came onto my floor, Bittner First, (still living there) and immediately formed friends with nearly everyone on the floor (many of whom I still am great friends with and still live together on the same floor). My RA at the time was incredible and I ended up rooming with him my Sophomore and half my Junior year. He just finished up school this past december. He was and is an amazing person and a role model to me.

The summer before my Sophomore year, I worked here at the college continuing my role as Admissions Webmaster. During my time here I met some great people, enjoyed my time, and…and met the girl I would end up dating at the beginning of the school year. Awwww…

My Sophomore year I started dating and enjoyed living in a Quad with 3 of my closest friends as well. I switched my major to Marketing from Computer Science and am confident it was a smart move. I also won the first game of Extreme Spoons. To my knowledge this game has only been played twice. My roommate won it the second time. For those who have never heard of Spoons, it’s a card game where you pass cards around in a clockwise direction one at a time until you get 4 of a kind. Then you grab one of several spoons sitting on the table in the middle of all the players. There is one less spoon then players. Think “musical chairs” just with cards and spoons. Now, to add the extreme into it, imagine the spoons being placed several hundred feet away, with obstacles layed out in your running path, and every other player who has been knocked out for not getting a spoon in a previous round playing the role of bodyguard. Luckily, nobody got hurt. Still, I feel this pressing need to say that this is not an official Messiah game. In fact, I am confident they would discourage the practice if they knew about it. Again, it has only been played twice.

Junior year is only half over so I can’t say too much to any experiences that have been distinct from the rest, but I am sure next year I will look back and find some moments that are more meaningful to me than the rest. I am still happily in a relationship, learning so much about the Marketing industry, and loving life here at Messiah.

I’ve basically ran out of things to say right now. If you have any questions or want some more clarification on something, please comment away. I promise I will answer any quesitons you have. I know this isn’t the most profound post and I know I could have done a better job. Let’s just say it’s been a long day and I can’t bring myself to writing more, or in more clear way.

Sorry.

I actually thought that was a good post! I am a kind of shy person.I’m hoping to come out of my shell in college. I read how you formed friends with many of the people on your floor. Do you feel it is really easy to make friends at Messiah? Is everyone friendly?

Thanks for commenting!. I was a very shy person coming into college. You can grow out of it. In my personal experience, it was the guys on the floor who helped me with that my first year here. Like I said in my post, it has been those core friends who’ve stuck together for the past three years.

Is it easy to make friends at Messiah? Yes, I think so. I made friends quickly and I certainly wasn’t outgoing or socially minded.

Is everyone friendly? No. It’s still a real world environment with real people. Some you’ll like, other’s you won’t. I would say on the whole though, Messiah in general has a great student body which is friendly.

You won’t have any problem finding friends. No problem at all.

I LOVE spoons!! It’s the most fun when you get alot of people(10 or so is good) and more than one deck of cards. I’ve never played the extreme version, though. I’ll have to play with the obstacle course/body gaurds next year:)at Messiah.

I won’t lie, spoons is pretty sweet. We had about 15 people when we played. If you’re looking to play an extreme version, you’re probably going to have to set this up yourself after you get a good group of friends gathered around. Like I said in my post, we’ve only played it twice and to my knowledge, no one else has ever played it. So, good luck with that!
