This summer while working in the admissions office, I received the opportunity to see first-hand how the Messiah College admissions staff portrays Messiah to perspective students.  Currently sitting at the half mark of my summer time here in the office, I took sometime to reflect on the tours I gave and what I tried to convey to students as the character of Messiah College.  While I can provide many facts to the students about the college and attempt to wow them with visions of a great college experience, none of what I say truly means anything to the student unless they can connect with the character of Messiah College.

Finally at the halfway point, I see the connection between the facts and figures and Messiah College.  The facts and figures represents Messiah College and show the character and atmosphere through the words and research of students, parents and community members.  The College’s staff, students and alumni, which I recognize as the foundation on which I will build my vocational future, emanate the atmosphere I know and cherish as Messiah.  The college which is recognized nationally for academic rigor and study abroad opportunities and also noted for the loving campus community, the college I know and see.  This is the faculties’ Messiah.  This is the student’s Messiah.  This is my Messiah.

College students are often faced with hours of class work, activities and fun.  While this makes for exciting and busy semesters, it can require students to sacrifice sleep hours.  Though some students dread the idea of having to work into the late hours of the night, I have found that I enjoy working at night.

One of my fondest memories comes from an all-nighter at the end of my sophomore year.  Two of my friends and I spent the entire night working on the first draft of our end-of-the-semester research paper.  We spent the first 4 hours of the morning working hard on our papers, but soon became weary-eyed and tired.  So, we drove to a local diner and had food and stocked up on caffeine.  We returned to our rooms and spent the last 3 hours of the evening finishing our papers and getting a few minutes of sleep before heading to class the next day.

Though I would never recommend saving important papers till the evening before they are do, the experience a student can have while deliriously working on a paper can make for a memorable night.
