Messiah College Media Mentions

The debate over whether interns should be paid or receive college credit for their workforce experience was recently reignited when the U.S. Department of Labor clarified the educational criteria for unpaid internships. The Chronicle of Higher Education spoke with Mike True, the director of the Internship Center at Messiah College, for its May 9 story.

Recent guidelines released by the U.S. Department of Labor regarding unpaid internships continue to create a stir, according to an April 23 Washington Post posting my blogger Jenna Johnson. Mike True, internship center director, is quoted.

New U.S. Labor Department regulations are attempting to clarify the role of employer and intern so as to prevent students from being taken advantage when in an unpaid internship. Mike True, director of the Internship Center, comments on the new regulations in an April 21 Chronicle of Higher Education article.

Mike True, director of Messiah’s Internship Center, is quoted extensively in an article in the February 2010 issue of the “Journal,” a publication of the National Association of Colleges and Employers. True explains the value of having “clear visions and objectives” in order to maintain an office that is successful in matching students and employers.

Messiah student Leah Gibbons, a history major, is interning at the Cumberland County Historical Society this fall where she is helping to develop a self-guided, audio walking tour of landmarks in the borough of Carlisle. Gibbons has selected the landmarks and developed the script for the tour. The Carlisle Sentinel covered the project in a Nov. 25 article.

“Just how important is your GPA?” ponders a Philadelphia Examiner writer in the paper’s Jan. 6 issue. Mike True, director of Messiah’s Internship Center, weighs in: “Employers want to see that a student has applied themselves well in the classroom, before that student takes on responsibilities inherent in the workplace.”
