Pitcher Jess Rhoads battles through injury to start great season

Jess Rhoads, the pitcher for the Messiah College softball team, has the team off to a great start, despite rehabbing both a knee and shoulder. On April 2, the York Daily Record talked to Jess about her off season and her hopes for the Falcons in 2011.

Chris Heisey remembered in Billings

March 28th, 2011

Chris Heisey, the Messiah alum who has worked his way into the Major Leagues, is interviewed by the Billings Gazette,  the hometown newspaper of the first farm team he was on before making his way to the Cincinnati Reds team. The article ran March 25.

International student excels on women’s baseketball team

February 25th, 2011

A native of Biatorbagy, Hungary, Dori Gyori came to central Pennsylvania her senior of high school and lived with Messiah Women’s Basketball Coach Mike Miller and his family. She quickly demonstrated her outstanding basketball skills on a high school team. Now, she is Messiah’s leading scorer and rebounder, according to a February 25 Harrisburg Patriot-News article.

Family and faith drive Messiah athletics

Alum soccer star chases bobsledding dream

December 10th, 2010

Jared Clugston led Messiah to three Division III national championships as a goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team. But, after his graduation in 2010 and while waiting to hear from the U.S. Marshals, Clugston began exploring his options for joining a bobsledding team. Clugston not only succeeded but made the U.S. National Bobseld Team, according to a December 9 article in the Pottsown Mercury.

A tale of three soccer-playing brothers

December 6th, 2010

The Thompsons-three–Logan, Danny, and Nick–grew up sharing a love of soccer. They never anticipated that soccer  would bring them each to Messiah College where they would share together in multiple quests for national championships. The eldest Thompson, Nick, is the Falcons leading scorer. CBS 21 (WHP) interviewed the brothers on December 2, just days before they left to clinch the Falcons’ eighth national championship.

Soccer is in Frey family blood

December 6th, 2010

Dad coaches his freshman daughter on the the Messiah’s women’s team while his son racks up points for the men’s team. Soccer is in the blood for Scott Frey and his children Alicia and Drew who are both standouts on their respective teams, according to a December 4 York Daily Record article. The family traveled to Texas for the NCAA Division III national championships games this past weekend. The men came home victorious and the women lost a heartbreaker.

National championships never get old at Messiah

The Harrisburg Patriot-News interviewed men’s and women’s soccer players as well as Messiah students to find out how the campus feels about their teams vying for another national championship this weekend in San Antonio, TX.  The story, which ran on November 30, reviews some of the history-making statistics racked up by these teams over the years.

Coaches daughter contributing to team’s success

Alicia Frey, daughter of women’s soccer coach Scott Frey, is having an incredible first-year season with the Falcons and has earned a spot as the third-leading scorer. Alicia talked to the Patriot-News for a late October story about her journey to Messiah College and what it’s like playing for one of the winningest teams in NCAA history.

Women’s soccer celebrates 61-game winning streak

October 1st, 2010

The Falcons beat York College on September 28 and clinched an NCAA Division III record — most consecutive wins with 61! The team hasn’t lost a game since they suffered a 1-0 defeat in the 2007 championship game to Wheaton. On October 1, the Harrisburg Patriot-News wrote about Messiah’s dominance.
