Archaeological dig on Cyprus provides unforgettable experience for students

This summer, Professor David Pettegrew took nine Messiah students with him to Larnaca, Cyprus for a three-week research trip that involved excavating and documenting ancient settlements from the late Roman period. The July 31 editon of the Harrisburg Patriot-News featured a story including interviews with Pettegrew and student Rachel Skotnicki.

Parents weigh in on benefits of Messiah education

All three of Rohan and Joy Hepkins’ daughters have found a home at Messiah College. Between their support of Christian higher education and Messiah’s reputation in each of the daughter’s chosen fields of study, Messiah has been the perfect choice for their family, comments Mr. Hepkins in the August article, “We Believe in Christian College,” in Campus Life’s Christian College Guide.

Alum continues climb through Reds organization

Louisville Bats hitting coach Smokey Garrett admits that he doesn’t know where Messiah College is located, but he does know that alum Chris Heisey is proving he’s more than qualified to be playing Triple AAA ball with the Bats. In an article posted on the Cincinnati Reds website, Sweet says of Heisey, “I see him as a guy who’s just finding out how good of a player he can be.”

Educator monitors review of social studies curriculum in Texas

John Fea, associate professor of American history, has been monitoring how a review board appointed by the Texas Board of Education is considering adjusting their state’s social studies curriculum. Some of the controversial decisions of the reviewers are bringing attention to the role of history in school curriculum. Fea voices his opinion in a July 26 op-ed in the Houston Chronicle; he writes, “History, when taught correctly, has the power to transform us, regardless of the subject matter. It forces us to put aside our own selfishness and see ourselves as part of a human story that is larger than the contemporary moment in which we live.”

Alum wins games and praise as local girls’ soccer coach

Seth Lehman, a 2005 Messiah graduate, coached the Cumberland Valley girls’ soccer team to an impressive 20-5 record, division championship, and trip to states. He also recently earned The Sentinel Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year award from the Carlisle Sentinel.

Student designs mural for downtown facade

Messiah student Amy Chow is spending the summer before her senior year completing an internship with the Pennsylvania Downtown Center. Chow, with another summer intern, designed a mural for the side of a building in downtown Butler, Pa. that features transportation vehicles associated with the city. Residents will have the opportunity to paint portions of the mural.

Scholar examines whether American is a Christian nation in op-ed

Richard Hughes, senior fellow in the Ernest L. Boyer Center, examines whether America can truly be defined as a Christian nation in his book “Christian America and the Kingdom of God.” Excerpting from his book, Hughes unpacks this topic and some recent comments made by Newt Gingrich in a July 12 op-ed to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

NCAA look at best programs in the country features Messiah

NCAA.com is taking a few weeks this summer to look back on 10 outstanding athletic programs, including Messiah’s impressive season that included national championshis in men’s and women’s soccer and softball. “Magic soccer runs” and a “scintillating softball title” is how NCAA is qualifying the Falcons championships.

Messiah adjusts enrollment strategies

July 7th, 2009

A July 5 story in the Carlisle Sentinel surveyed local colleges and universities to gauge the impact of the economy on enrollment. John Chopka, vice president for enrollment, noted that Messiah, like all other colleges and universities in the eastern United States, is expecting a decline in applicants as a nationwide population shift decreases the prospective applicant pool. The College is responding by strategically targeting recruitment efforts in areas of the country where applicants are plentiful.
