Star baseball player Chris Heisey is one step closer to the big leagues after being moved up from the Carolina Mudcats to the AAA Lousiville Bats this past weekend. Heisey, Messiah’s first baseball All-American, is one of the key prospects in the Cincinnnati Reds organization. The Sports Blog at the Patriot-News posted an article about Heisey on June 29.

“Women-CONNECT” magazine recently profiled President Kim Phipps among other female leaders in higher education in their Summer issue. Phipps shares in the article about her early exposure to injustice and how that helped to shape her passion for hospitality and her love for higher education.
The article closes with, “The compelling vision that Dr. Phipps articulates for Messiah College provides our region with a template for improving our community. Her concept of hospitality has energy and action behind it….It inspires each one of us to take responsibility to create an environment in our learning institutions, communities, and homes, to actively welcome and value each other.”

David Weaver-Zercher, associate professor of American religious history and chair of the department of biblical and religious studies, recently commented on a situation in western Pennsylvania regarding a particularly strict Amish sect and their conflict with local authorities regarding the treatment of sewage. The article appeared in the June 18 Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

Her father’s progressing Alzheimer’s contrasted with her young son’s developing memory is the theme for Valerie Rae Smith’s one-woman show, “Between Two Chairs,” showing at Open Stage in Harrisburg this weekend. The June 9 edition of the Carlisle Sentinel featured Smith, professor of theatre and co-chair of the department, in a story about her inspiration for the play and the challenges of caring for an ailing family member.

Caroyln Kreamer, chair of the nursing department, answered five questions for a new Health section of the Patriot-News about the future of nursing in this economy. The story, which ran in the June 7 edition, provides good, practical advice for current nursing students about how to navigate the challenges of this job market.

First-year student Jessica Rhoads has another honor to add to her ever-growing list: Sports Illustrated has identified her as one of their “Faces in the Crowd” in the June 8 issue. Rhoads, pitcher for the girls’ softball team, helped the Falcons win their first national championship.

The Catholic Witness, a newspaper of the Diocese of Harrisburg, features the efforts of Ray Norman, dean of the School of Mathematics, Engineering, and Business, and several students as they design, build, and implement water pump structures and latrine systems to assist disabled people in Mali, western Africa. The College’s chief contacts in Mali are four Sisters of the Annunciation who train village women in a variety of skills.
