Fifteen Messiah College students are in New Zealand for a J-Term cross-cultural experience. Their recent experiences on a rural farm caught the attention of The Gisborne Herald, a New Zealand newspaper on Jan. 19. The paper interviewed several Messiah students about their experiences abroad.

Barack Obama’s savvy use of the Internet throughout his campaign and subsequent election has rallied a remarkable number of people, according to Internet communication experts. Robin Lauermann, professor of politics and expert in public opinion, told GNS Political Writer Chuck Raash that “she believes Obama’s online network will demand fairly early results.” From a public policy perspective, Lauermann points out that it may be better to focus on building small successes rather than attempting a swooping accomplishment.

As Barack Obama is sworn in as the country’s 44th president, many historians are drawing parallels between how the historical significance of the moment recalls the presidencies of Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Paul Rego, professor of politics, offered comments to The Providence Journal on Jan. 18 about the similarities between Obama, Lincoln, and FDR.

It seems that winning is contagious at Messiah, asserts the Harrisburg Patriot-News in a Jan. 4 story about the recent success of our men’s and women’s soccer, women’s basketball, field hockey, and baseball teams. Mike True, director of Messiah’s Internship Center, weighs in: “Employers want to see that a student has applied themselves well in the classroom, before that student takes on responsibilities inherent in the workplace.”

President-elect Barack Obama’s pick of Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration drew criticism and much media attention. John Fea, professor of American history, wrote a thoughtful opinion piece for the Dec. 23 Philadelphia Inquirer that considers the similarities and differences between Warren and Billy Graham, the evangelist tapped for almost every inauguration since 1965. USA Today then excerpted part of Fea’s piece in a summary of coverage regarding Warren’s selection.
