Junior striker Amanda Naeher was named an All-American after helping the Falcons clinch the Division III national championship. Amanda, who scored 33 goals in 26 games, is noted by Coach Scott Frey for her “power, strength, and technical ability.”

It’s important for a teacher to remain professional, even when a parent is angry and unloading their frustration, according to Anita Voelker, education professor at Messiah, in a “Suite 101″ posting for new teachers about what to do when an upset parent visits their classroom. Suite 101 is an independent, online magazine.

Joanna Haqq of Belchertown, Mass. was a key component in the girl’s soccer team’s 5-0 victory over Wheaton College to win the NCAA Division III championship. According to Coach Scott Frey, Joanna is a “dynamic,” “crafty” player who is appreciated not just for talent on the field but her smile and engaging personality.

When determining the winner of the NCAA Division III men’s championship soccer game came down to penalty kicks, Messiah Coach Dave Brandt decided to replace game goalie Jared Clugston with Nick Blossey. Blossey succcessfully blocked all three of Stevens Institute of Technology’s attempts, amd Messiah went on to win its sixth championship.
The story, “LeBoeuf grad Blossey enjoys magic moment,” was in the Dec. 10 Erie Times.

Three adventurous Messiah College students happened to be on board the “Devil Train” in Ecuador when “Nightline” was filming a segment. When the train derailed, as it often does because the tracks are so rickety, the reporter spoke with the three students about their adventure.

Derek McCleaf, a 2008 graduate of Messiah attending Yale University School of Public Health, wrote an opinion piece for the Dec. 7 issue of the Harrisburg Patriot-News to argue for the importance of childhood vaccines. McCleaf writes, “Our present herd immunity hinges upon parents vaccinating their children. Abstaining from this practice will have a profoundly negative impact on our children’s health.”

“Twice as nice,” the headline reads on Messiah’s web page, and, indeed, it’s doubly exciting for the College to celebrate two national soccer championships. The men defeated Stevens Tech in an overtime shootout, and the women handed Wheaton a decisive 5-0 loss. For the second time since 2005, both of Messiah’s soccer teams are national champions.
