“Amish America,” a blog moderated by a Snowden Fellow at Elizabethtown College’s Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, features an indepth interview with David Weaver-Zercher, chair of the department of Biblical and religious studies. Weaver-Zercher, a scholar who has written about many aspects of Amish life, shares insights about perceptions of the Amish.

“Babylonian law establishing contract terms between a master and apprentice might be mankind’s earliest written reference to workforce development,” according to Mike True, director of the College’s Internship Center. True recently spoke to a group of Franklin County businesses about how to develop an effective internship program. The “Herald-Mail” of Chambersburg covered the event in their Sept. 12 issue.

In a presidential election season that has gotten everyone’s attention, plenty of voices are weighing in on the issues and the candidates. In a Sept. 6 “Pittsburgh Tribune Review” article, American history professor John Fea offers this thought–”Those Hillary Democrats, I think that’s what this race is going to come down to”– in response to discussion about which candidate can attract blue-collar voters.

John Fea, professor of American history, considers Sarah Palin’s Pentecostal background in an op-ed printed by the “Austin American-Statesman” on Sept. 5. Considering other national figures of similar denominational background, Fea concludes, “John McCain’s vice-presidential nominee is a serious evangelical who will rally his conservative base, but don’t expect a tongues-speaking Holy Ghost revival to break out.”

Answering the questions, “Who is Sarah Palin?”, “Was this pick good for McCain?”, and “Does this pick help or hurt the Democrats?”, politics professor Paul Rego considers how the selection of Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential candidate is affecting the election. His op-ed, “Does Palin help or hurt the ticket” was published in the Sept. 7 “York Daily Record.”

Recent graduate Corrie Jones cites the excellent physical therapy that she received after tearing her ACL in high school as the motivation for her desire to study physical therapy at Messiah and now at the University of Maryland as a graduate student. Jones, who talked about her experience leading a spring break mission trip to the Dominican Republic to work in one of CURE International’s hospitals, was featured in an August 31 edition of her hometown newspaper, the Herald-Mail.

Stories about the timing of the Republican National Convention and the impending arrival of Hurricane Gustav on the Gulf Coast prompted John Fea, professor of history, to coin the quote, “This could be a split-screen convention,” a phrase that has been used repeatedly by news sources nationally.
