New faculty member and urban anthropologist Jenell Williams Paris is wondering, “What’s the deal with the East Shore-West Shore divide?” As a Grantham resident who regularly visits Harrisburg with her children, Paris explains in her March 30 “As I See It” column for the “Harrisburg Patriot-News” why the West and East Shores seem much further away than an odometer would tell.

Messiah College pre-med students practiced “humor in healing” by dressing as clowns and visiting patients at Harrisburg Hospital. The story, on the front page of the Local section of the March 31 “Harrisburg Patriot-News,” features Messiah students’ participation in the “Clowning Around at Harrisburg Hospital” program.

The Falcons traveled to Hope College, Michigan, this past weekend were they scored a decisive 80-60 victory over Oglethorpe College in the Final Four before faltering in the championship game to undefeated Howard Payne.

The Falcons are headed to the Final Four for the first time since the 2000-2001 season. With victories over the University of Rochester and Tufts, the women’s team now looks to Hope College in Holland, Mich., where they will face off against Oglethorpe University on Friday.

All eyes are on Messiah as the College prepares to host the opening rounds of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball playoffs this weekend. Bob Black, columnist for the “Harrisburg Patriot-News” wrote in a March 7 article about the post-season games, “Messiah is deep, athletic, and talented with plenty of size.”

In a story about the stresses of being a teacher, the March 2 “Philadelphia Inquirer” again quoted Kevin Zook, chair of the education department at Messiah College. Zook’s contribution to the article was beneath the heading “Get parental support;” he asserts that teachers are wise to reach out to parents to determine the home environment of their students and what teaching methods might be most effective.
“Life lessons: Teachers should work to balance stressful jobs” is not available online.

For four years in a row, the Falcons have dominated the MAC Commonwealth Championship, thanks in part to the talents of senior Nikki Lobach, MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Lobach helped the Falcons rebound against Lebanon Valley on March 1 to capture the conference title. The “Harrisburg Patriot-News” wrote about the game on March 2.
