Professor comments on how to track your family’s medical history

WhatHappensNow, a web site developed to provide “the best advice for life” recently featured an article, “Creating Your Family Medical History,” that included quotes from Messiah College’s Raeann Hamon, professor of human development and family science. “Start asking questions at family gatherings…some people don’t mind, but other family members may be more reluctant, so you need to respect the boundaries,” Hamon advises. “If you let your family know you’re doing this to improve the next generation’s health, they’re usually more willing to participate.”

Messiah dominates in first round of playoffs

Messiah’s women’s basketball team handed Widener a decisive victory in the first round of the MAC Commonwealth Championship playoffs on Wednesday night. The “Carlisle Sentinel,” reporting on the game, called the 82-53 win a “blowout.” The ladies play Lebanon Valley on Saturday, March 1.

Falcons ready for the playoffs

Messiah’s women’s basketball team captured their seventh regular season MAC Commonwealth Conference title after a Feb. 23 victory over Albright College. A Feb. 27 article in the “Harrisburg Patriot-News” comments how Messiah has “been blessed with solid senior leadership.” The Falcons will take on Widener in the first playoff game.

Messiah alum excels in hospitality business

Diane (Thomas) Poillon `91 represents the third generation of her family to lead Willow Valley Associates, a multi-faceted hospitality and real estate company in Lancaster County, Pa. The “Lancaster New Era” recently profiled Poillon’s lifetime of experience in her family’s business in a Feb. 18 article.

Young voters gain attention in presidential primary

The presidential candidates would be wise to consider a stop in a place like Grantham, according to Ford Turner in a Feb. 17 frontpage “Patriot-News” article about the potential power of Pennsylvania’s young voters, primarily those on college campuses. After interviewing several Messiah College students and students from other area colleges, Turner surmises college campuses could be crucial in the candidates’ searches for votes.

Falcons stay tough against Albright College

February 18th, 2008

For the eleventh straight time, the Messiah College women’s basketball team defeated the Albright College Lions in a 65-52 victory. Albright player Staci Waligorski told the “Reading Eagle” about the Falcons’ Nikki Lobach: “They know when to get the ball to her, and she knows what to do with it when she gets it.” The teams meet again in the regular season finale on Feb. 23.

Longtime pastor noted for serving with “heart and humor”

Thirty years is a long time for an associate pastor to remain at one church, but there’s nowhere else that Messiah College alum Marvin Reich `70 would rather be, according to a Feb. 8 “Lancaster New Era” article. Reich serves at Grace Baptist Church in Lancaster. The congregation will recognize his service with a roast on Feb. 17.

Faculty member offers word of caution to first-year teachers

A teacher’s rookie year can be difficult as he or she encounters some of the unexpected challenges and stresses of relating to students and their parents. Kevin Zook, chair of the education department at Messiah, offered this caution in a Feb. 3 “Philadelphia Inquirer” article: “One of the biggest mistakes I have observed in new teachers is the desire to be liked by their students. They then err on the side of being too lenient and casual in their interactions with students.”

Basketball teams defeat Lycoming

February 1st, 2008

It was a clean sweep for Messiah’s men’s and women’s basketball teams when they defeated Lycoming College in a doubleheader on Jan. 30. The men won 79-68 and the women 60-47. The “sweep” was covered by the Carlisle “Sentinel.”

Messiah wrestling enjoying “consistent” season

For the past three weeks, Messiah College’s wrestling team has enjoyed the distinction of being ranked number 26 in the nation. Head coach Bryan Brunk told the “Harrisburg Patriot-News” that he is thrilled the program has maintained a consistent ranking — a sure sign that the team is excelling.
