Canon XL H1 Camera
Here’s a short video about our new HD camera, the Canon XL H1. We purchased the H1 out of a range of possible cameras from Panasonic, Sony and JVC because of three considerations:
- Since we already own a Canon XL1 and an XL1s, many of the same accessories will work with the H1, including our XL SD video lenses and attachments. Even though they are only SD, in many circumstances this won’t be a problem.
- One of our program partners is Temple University in Philadelphia. Our students are required to spend one or two semesters there with the intention of taking some of the more advanced production courses available there. Temple is switching over to the XL H1 in their video production classes.
- Of all the cameras in its price range, only the XL H1 has an HD SDI video out directly from the camera eletronics, allowing uncompressed 1920 x 1440 HD to be taken out of the camera with no intermediate compression. Although this doesn’t help us at this point, it’s likely that we can take advantage of it in the near future.
