MAJOR Bug in Quicktime 7.4!!

It’s confirmed: there’s a terrific bug in QuickTime 7.4! Unfortunately, the bug only kicks in when you have a video render that takes longer than 10 minutes. I had installed the update on my Macs at home and did a short video render this last week in both FCP and After Effects and everything seemed fine. I tried it this last weekend and confirmed that there is a serious bug in QuickTime 7.4.

The problem was first noted on January 16th on both the Adobe and QuickTime forums:

QuickTime

The fix is to revert back to QuickTime 7.3.1. Here’s the quickest and
simplest solution to successfully downgrade from Quicktime 7.4 to
Quicktime 7.3.1

Step 2. Download and install the program Pacifist: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743

Step 3. Run Pacifist, select the downloaded QuickTime 7.3.1 .pkg, then click the install icon. When it informs you that the package files already exist, choose “Replace” for each file. You can select the checkbox, so it will replace all the files without asking you again for each file.

Step 4. Restart the Mac.

I have performed this on four Digital Editing Macs (including both PPC and Intel types) and it does the trick. For a further reference on this method see

The lesson is that, like with all Apple updates - DO NOT BE THE FIRST ONE TO UPGRADE. Wait until others do it and take time to read the forums and see what everyone else’s experiences are. This should be especially true with QuickTime as the last few releases have been unstable at best. This should be even more critical if you work under tight deadlines and absolutely NEED to deliver.
