“Mangiare” in Italian means “to eat”. The imperative, meaning what you have to do, is “Mangia!,” “Eat!”. When spoken it sounds a lot like the Japanese word for comics: manga. I often feel like a person at a banquet when presented with the world of manga!

On my recent stay in San Francisco I was privileged to be able to attend an exhibition of Dr. Osamu Tezuka’s artwork, including some of the original drawings for Astro Boy. Here is the link for the exhibit at the Asian American Museum in San Francisco: Marvel of Manga.

Another interesting place in San Francisco for comic book aficionados is the Cartoon Museum. Take a visit to their site as well. I enjoyed browsing there several afternoons this past summer. I will be teaching a class on Japanese Pop Culture in the Spring and am already getting excited about it!
