What’s New in Engineering

It’s that time again: the end-of-semester crunch each spring for Department of Engineering students and faculty. The 5th annual MEB Scholarship Day is just around the corner, on May 2nd, 2008. Mark your calendars!

MEB Scholarship Day plays host to many events each spring, the most noteworthy of which (for the Department of Engineering) are the Senior Engineering Design Project Presentations. This year’s senior design teams have been working very hard on a variety of projects, a list of which will be coming out shortly. As in the past, we will be webcasting the project presentations live all day on May 2nd. Details on the webcast will be coming out here as well!

For senior engineering students and their families: also mark your calendars for the Senior Celebration, a time of food and reflection following the conclusion of MEB Scholarship Day. Invitations to this event will be going out via senior engineering students in the coming weeks. Questions about attendance should be directed to Jean McCauslin.

This spring semester has been a whirlwind of exciting opportunities and events in the Department of Engineering, particularly in relation to the IPC. Unfortunately, it has been so much of a whirlwind that I haven’t found time - until now - to share this news on our weblog. I’ll be elaborating later, but for now here’s the short list of what has been going on:

Messiah College Department of Engineering hosts Engineers’ Week activities

Prospective students, high school visitors, and accepted students all visited the Department of Engineering for a variety of activities during National Engineers’ Week, February 18-22.

Engineers’ Weekend 2008

Due to inclement weather, our first Engineers’ Weekend had to be canceled. Our second one, though, was a great success as our guests visited with current students faculty and staff, learned about Messiah’s Engineering program, and built and tested mock bomb diffusing LEGO™ robots.

The IPC continues to develop

This semester is the first semester with two IPC courses running simultaneously, which is bringing online new opportunities for student mentoring and cooperation between class years.

The Solar Scholars project commences its final stage of work

The Solar Scholars project within the Collaboratory is finally beginning official construction of its solar training facility on campus. Ground breaking happens in April. Stay tuned for more news.
There is other exciting news from the Collaboratory as well, although we haven’t released it yet. I’ll give you a hint: it involves a substantial financial grant and a different Collaboratory project team. More details to come when they are available!
