On February 8 and 9, the Department of Theatre and Dance will hold auditions for our spring production, THE TENDER LAND.
The Department of Theatre and Dance and Messiah’s Opera Workshop have joined forces to present our first ever opera, THE TENDER LAND. With music by Aaron Copland and libretto by Horace Everett, THE TENDER LAND revolves around the Moss family, living in a rural mid-western town just after the turn of the 20th century, and the graduation of their oldest daughter, Laurie. Laurie is unsure of her future in the world and what she will do after high school when two drifters happen upon the farm and excite in the girl dreams of a larger life.
AUDITION INFO:
General Auditions will be held on Monday, February 8 and Tuesday, February 9 from 7-10pm each evening in the Poorman Black Box Theatre in Climenhaga. Students may sign up for an audition slot in the theatre hallway in the basement of Climenhaga.
Those auditioning should prepare one art song or opera aria of your choice in any language. A pianist will be provided for your audition. You may bring your own pianist or sing a cappella if you prefer; however, please no recorded accompaniments. In opera auditions, the emphasis is placed on the quality of singing and the singer’s ability to communicate through sound and text. Please practice and prepare accordingly.Additional information, including roles, is attached.

Casting is open to all members of the academic community. Occasionally, guest actors will be employed. Any Messiah College student enrolled and in good academic standing as defined by the statement on satisfactory academic process in the student handbook is encouraged to audition. The Department of Theatre follows an Inclusive Casting Policy which means that casting is open to all actors regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, or age. Exceptions to the Inclusive Casting Policy may be taken when specified by the director’s production concept. An exception to the Inclusive Casting Policy must be made when the dramatist’s stage directions regarding race, ethnicity, gender, disability, or age are both explicit and protected by the license to produce the play. Theatre majors who have declared the acting emphasis are required to audition for all department productions.

Hoverboards Banned on Campus

Hoverboard Policy:
Due to concerns regarding fire safety and operator safety raised by the National Fire Protection Agency and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (which has logged 28 fires in 19 states to date), the college is banning hoverboards on campus. This decision was made after research and consultation with the college’s insurance carrier. This means that hoverboards are not permitted in any campus building, including residence halls and their use on campus roads, sidewalks, parking lots and surrounding athletic fields is prohibited. The term “hoverboards” includes but is not limited to self-balancing scooters, battery or gas operated scooters, hands-free segways & electric powered skateboards. We feel this policy is necessary to keep our campus safe in light of the numerous safety issues that have been raised surrounding these devices. Thank you for your support in this important safety matter. – – Kathie Shafer, crisis controller
