Home Stretch to Staycation

The week before Fall Break can be difficult. Push through the hand cramps of the five papers due by midnight, and study hard for those stacked midterms. Pace yourself, taking one day at a time. Before you know it, we will have our staycation at home. Some of you have trips planned, some are working, and some are using this time to do laundry and bake cookies. I say to you “huzzah” in all of your Break endeavors. We are nearly there.

Consider study abroad!

Greetings from the Intercultural office. As you finish up the first month of classes on campus this fall, we also hope that you will consider whether a study abroad experience is in your future as a Messiah College student. As you know, we offer a number of study abroad opportunities. One such opportunity you should know about is the BestSemester programs offered in partnership with the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities.

These programs are Christ-centered, provide culturally-immersive experiential learning, and enable you to study abroad with students from other Christian colleges. Through BestSemester you’ll not only learn a new culture but develop lasting friendships and grow in your faith in the process.

BestSemester programs are offered overseas in Australia, Costa Rica, Oxford, and Uganda.

In addition, there are three professionally-focused programs in the U.S.:
American Studies Program (Washington, D.C.)
Contemporary Music Center (Nashville)

Fall has arrived folks, and I’m excited. For me, this means Pumpkin-spiced everything, binging Sherlock episodes, and my world smelling like gingersnap cookies. If you need me, make sure you bring some. I encourage you to seize everyday as a new adventure, and challenges as opportunities for you to be a rock star.

Let’s talk about Chapel.

Everyone would have received this in our email: Beginning of semester email (Commuters)

Image result for messiah college chapel

Chapel is not optional, it is mandatory, and should not be taken lightly. As commuters, we were granted grace to only attend 7 chapels per semester as opposed to the 14 that residential students must attend. If there is a conflict (work, internship, family complication, etc.) please notify College Ministries by filing a chapel attendance petition which can be found on your student self-service menu. College Ministries will then notify you whether or not they have accepted your request.

We are still loving our new lounge, thank you to those who signed the “Thank you cards” for President Phipps, Kathie Shafer, and the Frey family. Their hard work deserved notice, and it was important to me that we showed our appreciation. If you have not seen the new lounge, PLEASE VISIT US. It is wonderful, magical, and dreams come true there.

However, please notice that the new signs in the Lounge about the new wall installation of the small conference room that is being designed. This is the space with the white board and television around a table. Its original intent was to be a study space/cubicle area similar to those in the Murray Library. The wall installation will be occurring October 5.

Commuter Lounge Ribbon Cutting

Commuter Invitation Postcard 2017

Hey Messiah College Commuters! After relentless work this summer, the much anticipated NEW Commuter Lounge is finally finished! Bright, spacious, and unique to our needs, our new lounge on the lower level of Mountain View is incomparable to our original hovel in Hoffman. You should have received an invitation in the mail just like the one to the right. Please join us August 31st at 5:15 as President Kim Phipps dedicates the space with a ribbon-cutting!

The New Kid

IMG_0411

Hi! My name is Cate Cutting and I am the new Commuter Liaison. For the past few years this was a role carried by Justin Stimpson, who had worked so hard as the bridge between college administration and the needs of the commuter student body. He did a wonderful job, and I hope to continue his legacy as we open the new lounge he and I worked so hard to initiate!

About Me

I’m a sophomore commuter who is double majoring in Dance and Social Work.

I also work as the work-study in the Student Involvement and Leadership Program Office.

My other part-time jobs include teaching dance at Reverence Studios and being an in-home hairdresser. I have done both of these for two years.

I can be easily persuaded by chocolate and/or British TV shows.

If you should ever need me, my email is commuterservices@messiah.edu.

New Students

For all of the new students reading the Commuter Connection, welcome to Messiah College! We are so excited to have you join our community, especially at a time when opportunities for us are so flourishing! I am excited to meet all of you and hope you decide to attend the Welcome Week activities that Julie Cline (Assistant Director of the Student Involvement and Leadership Programs who oversees Commuter Services) has put in place for you specifically. It was a memorable and invaluable experience for me and I encourage you to take advantage of it. Commuters are allowed to have fun too.

New Year Checklist

  • Books are ordered and received
  • Your account Financial Aid needs are met
  • Your class schedule is printed and reviewed
  • On your calendar you have the Commuter Lounge Opening!

So. Everybody. Let’s do this thing!

COMMUTER LOUNGE CLEAN-UP

MCLogo_CommuterServices_BW

As finals start, we want to wish you luck in the coming days and we pray that you do your best as you finish up your spring semester at Messiah College!

Did you know that in the summer the Hoffman basement (AKA Commuter Lounge) is converted into campus-wide laundry services area? In preparation of summer conferences, laundry services takes over the lounge, so we need to be sure that your personal belongings are cleaned out of the lockers and common area by the end of the day on Tuesday May 9th – last day of finals.   Anything left in the lockers or lounge on Wed May 10th will be taken to the Student Involvement office in Larsen Student Union (2nd floor) for the remainder of the week to be claimed.  Our office needs to make sure that the lounge space is cleaned out ASAP.

If you have any questions about your locker, please don’t hesitate to ask.  We are excited to unveil the BRAND NEW COMMUTER LOUNGE with BRAND NEW LOCKERS for the fall semester, so keep your eyes out on your email about when the time is right to reserve one.  Again good luck and have a great summer!

Commuter Student Parking

Will you be commuting to Messiah next year?

If you are a Messiah College undergraduate commuter student parking a vehicle on campus at any time you must purchase a commuter parking permit.  The easiest way to do this is through the online parking registration process.  Your online parking registration timeslot is available now.  Registration takes place between April 21 and May 2 during the hours of 8 AM to 5 PM EST Monday through Friday.

Subject to availability based on timeslot registration order, beginning fall 2017 commuter students are eligible to apply for a P1 parking permit or a P parking permit.

1.       Students purchasing the P1 permit may park in only the specially designated commuter spaces in the J lot adjacent to Bittner Residence or in only the specially designated commuter spaces in the WW lot in front of Mountain View Residence.  If the designated spaces are not available, you must park in the Starry Field Lot (over the covered bridge.)  Do not park in other than the designated commuter spaces in the J or WW lot or your vehicle will be cited.

2.       Students purchasing the P permit may only park in the Starry Field Lot (over the covered bridge.)

To receive the early registration price of $50/year you must register prior to July 31.  Prices increase to $75/year beginning August 1.

If you are unable to register online utilizing your timeslot you may:

1.       Complete a parking request form.  The form is available on the Falcon Exchange website under Quick Links at:  http://www.messiah.edu/info/22320/student_vehicle_registration .

2.       Print out your completed Student Parking Registration form and mail it to:

Falcon Exchange

Messiah College

One College Avenue, Suite 4516

Mechanicsburg, PA 17055

OR

3.       Email your completed Student Parking Registration to us at:  falconexchange@messiah.edu.

Questions or difficulties with registration must be reported the same day as your timeslot to preserve your space in line and should be directed to the Falcon Exchange at falconexchange@messiah.edu or call 717-766-2511 ext. 7213.
